About me

I grew up near Eugene, Oregon, went to Reed college in math/physics and UC Berkeley for a PhD in physics. I worked mostly at the Stanford Linear Accelerator in x-ray physics, with sabbaticals in Paris, Lausanne, and Grenoble. I invented some magnetic x-ray sources at SLAC, and began attending Burning Man in 1996, with art installations in 2002, 2003, 2013, 2016 and 2018.

I taught a course for the Stanford Extension in 2003 on “Alternative Arts in the Bay Area”, which consisted of studio visits to artists who were not doing things for money, collections or museums, and were not necessarily educated in art. This is the style of art I’ve pursued since. I’ve also taught welding at The Crucible in Oakland.

I got married in 2006, bailed out of Stanford, and moved to Berkeley where my wife Jana and I run a 15000 foot maker space in West Berkeley. Jana makes and repairs lighting, and I have a general shop with milling machines including CNC, lathes, welders, sheet metal and wood machinery, a 3D printer and a large laser cutter. Our dog comes to work every day and helps out in so many ways.
